Tyson Ochsner is an Associate Professor and Applied Soil Physics Specialist in OSU’s Department of Plant and Soil Sciences. Ochsner leads the research effort of crop water use, soil water balance, water resource impacts of bioenergy cropping systems and soil carbon impacts of bioenergy cropping systems for OSU’s BRDI project.

 

Effect of Drought on Biomass Plants

Tyson Ochsner discusses information about the effects a drought can have on the production of switchgrass and sorghum being raised for biomass. During this research, 2 years of severe drought occurred in Oklahoma. Tyson Ochsner is an Associate Professor and Applied Soil Physics Specialist in OSU’s Department of Plant and Soil Sciences. Ochsner leads the research effort of crop water use, soil water balance, water resource impacts of bioenergy cropping systems and soil carbon impacts of bioenergy cropping systems for OSU’s BRDI project.

 

Grazing Potential on Switchgrass

Jagadeesh Mosali discusses information about the grazing potential on switchgrass. One of the benefits of producing switchgrass in Oklahoma is that it can be a dual-purpose use crop to feed cattle and provide biomass for bioenergy, without taking away input from human food supplies. Jagadeesh Mosali is a Soils and Crops Staff Scientist in the Agricultural Division at The Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation. Mosali leads this research effort at the Noble Foundation, partnering with OSU.

 

Measuring Environmental Fluxes and Impacts in Feedstock Production

Water is an important and limited resource in Oklahoma. Nitrous oxide emissions measurements are important to understand to know what production systems can produce the most biomass while creating the least amount of nitrous oxide emissions. Jason Warren discusses the methods and calculations that this data are being collected in the field. This research is being conducted for the OSU Biomass Research and Development Initiative. Jason Warren is an Associate Professor and Soil and Water Conservation/Management Extension Specialist in OSU’s Department of Plant and Soil Sciences.
