2024 Partners in Progress Report
The Oklahoma Peanut Commission is appreciative of the peanut growers and shellers for their support of the Peanut Checkoff Program. We strive to maximize the use of funds to promote and support peanut production in Oklahoma now and in the future. The Partners in Progress Report provides research data that results from checkoff dollars.
The Oklahoma Peanut Commission has several goals and objectives that are all equally important. The first is to improve the economic conditions of Oklahoma peanut farmers and their families through effective research. Thus, research conducted by the Oklahoma Peanut Improvement Team is necessary to continue successful peanut production in Oklahoma.
Developing new varieties and fine-tuning production practices keep the state’s peanut industry profitable. New high-yielding disease-resistant peanut varieties are needed. Also, researchers and educators must be willing to continue developing economic disease management and weed control programs.
Most growers reported high yields in 2024. Extreme heat in the late summer did not reduce yields as expected, possibly due to excellent irrigation management by producers. The future of Oklahoma peanut production is bright, and we must produce a safe and nutritious, quality product for peanut consumers. Peanut butter and other peanut products must continually be promoted in the United States and abroad.
The National Peanut Board is working to eradicate peanut allergies by funding groundbreaking research for an FDA-approved treatment in the U.S. and around the world. This will support the peanut industry’s efforts to reintroduce peanuts into U.S. schools, increasing awareness about allergens, rather than banning peanuts.
The health benefits of peanuts should be promoted. Multiple studies have found associations between nut consumption and reduced risk of cancer mortality. Research shows peanuts contain many nutrients with properties that prevent cancer, including unsaturated fats, vitamins and minerals.
Oklahoma’s peanut producers and the Oklahoma Peanut Commission are proud of their
long and productive history with Oklahoma State University, USDA-Agricultural Research
Service and the National Peanut Board. We look forward to the future and the shared
benefits of continuing this partnership.
