Peanut weed management trials were established at the Oklahoma State University Caddo Research Station near Fort Cobb. Peanuts were planted on May 8, 2024, in 36-inch rows, and preemergence (PRE) treatments were applied following planting. All trials received a Prowl H2O (1 quart per acre) PRE treatment. All trials received a postemergence (POST) treatment of Butyrac 200 (1 pint per acre) + Dyne-Amic (6 ounces per acre) and Select (1 pint/acre) + Dyne-Amic (6 ounces/acre). Trials were irrigated throughout the growing season, and other pests were managed. Trials were evaluated for visual peanut response, visual weed control and yield. Peanuts were dug on Oct. 10 and field-dried and harvested on Oct. 16.

The first trial established was to evaluate preemergence herbicides for peanut response and weed control. Preemergence herbicides were applied immediately behind the planter or at-crack. Preemergence herbicides used included Dual Magnum, Valor EZ, Outlook, Warrant, Zidua, Brake, Pursuit and Cadre. Visual peanut response was less than or equal to 3% two weeks after planting (Table 1). Visual peanut response was greatest four weeks after planting (WAP) at less than or equal to 8% except for Dual Magnum + Zidua + Valor EZ applied at-crack, which was 21%. Late-season peanut injury was not observed for any treatment. Palmer amaranth control was 86%-100% two weeks after planting and 100% for all treatments four weeks after planting (Table 2). Palmer amaranth control eight weeks after planting was 89%-100% for all treatments. Texas panicum control was 81%-100% two weeks after planting and 100% for all treatments four weeks after planting (Table 3). Texas panicum control was greater than or equal to 81% for all treatments eight weeks after treatment except for Brake and Outlook + Valor EZ. Ivyleaf morningglory control was 79-100% two weeks after planting and greater than or equal to 94% for all treatments four weeks after planting (Table 4).  Ivy-leaf morning-glory control was greater than or equal to 96% for all treatments containing Pursuit or Cadre eight weeks after planting. Peanut yield was greater than 5,400 pounds per acre for all treatments except Outlook + Valor EZ (Table 1).

The second trial was established to evaluate in-season control of volunteer cotton. XtendFlex and Enlist cotton volunteer plants were evaluated. Initial peanut injury was 3%-6% for all treatments except 2,4-DB (dichlorophenoxybutyric acid), which was 0% (Table 5). Peanut injury three weeks after application (WAA) was less than or equal to 1%. XtendFlex volunteer cotton control was greater than or equal to 90% for all treatments except Anthem Flex six weeks after application (Table 6). Enlist volunteer cotton control was greater than or equal to 85% for all treatments except 2,4-DB six weeks after application (Table 6). Peanut yield was greater than 5,250 pounds/acre for all treatments except 2,4-DB on Enlist cotton (Table 5).

The third trial was established to evaluate peanut variety response to Brake (fluridone) herbicide. Stand reduction was 0% for all treatments (data not shown). Peanut stunting was 3% or less for Lariat and 0% for Ole and Span 17 (Table 7). Visual injury was 8% for Ole peanuts that received the 2X rate of Brake two weeks after application and 4% or less for all other timings and rates. Lariat’s and Span17’s visual injury was 4% or less for all timings and rates (Table 7). Peanut yield was greater than 6,600 pounds/acre for Span 17 and Lariat peanuts that received a Brake application, while all other treatments were less than 5,800 pounds/acre (Table 7).
