Overview

  • Averages across locations indicated that cultivar ACI 476 was the best performing runner-type in yield and value per acre.
  • The small-seeded runner-type ARSOK S58B, which can be marketed as runner or Spanish, was the top-yielding entry across locations in the Spanish/Valencia trial. This breeding line has resistance to Sclerotinia blight and will be released in 2026 as “USDA-ARS Spunner.”
  • Among the true Spanish entries, cultivar OLé was the top performer. ARS breeding line ARSOK S104-2E has performed well over the years and across locations and will be released in 2026 as “USDA-ARS Myers’ Matador.”
  • Traditional Valencia breeding lines from New Mexico State University performed well across most locations, with NMPR25 yielding the highest.
  • Among Virginia entries, cultivar Comrade was consistently the top performer for yield and value per acre. Among ARS breeding lines, ARSOK V103-1 performed well and is being evaluated for release based on disease resistance. ARSOK V120L was evaluated for the first year and performed well.

Peanut production in Oklahoma is generally located in three geographical regions: southwestern, west central and northwest. Each region differs in environmental and biological stressors that affect crop production, so the same peanut cultivar will likely perform differently across regions. The Oklahoma Peanut Variety Trials are conducted annually in each region and are designed to test the performance of commonly grown cultivars and potential cultivar releases against each other. Valencia breeding lines and cultivars were added as trial entries due to industry interest in growing this market type in the state. Also included in the trial are several small-seeded runner lines or cultivars that are intended to be marketed as Spanish or Valencia peanuts. These entries are noted as small-seeded runners in trial data tables. Severe wild hog damage affected the yields for Virginia entries at the Davidson location, despite attempts to replant. The results of these annual trials can serve as a guide for producers when choosing a cultivar to plant.

Variety Trial Methods

All entries (cultivars and advanced breeding lines) in the Oklahoma Peanut Variety Trials were high-oleic. Thirty-two (32) entries were included in all locations in 2025:

  • 8 runner-types: cultivars ACI 476, Lariat and Georgia 09B and breeding lines ARSOK 95-1, ARSOK R106-9L, ARSOK R109-1L, ARSOK R112L and ARSOK R113L.
  • 6 true Spanish types: cultivars OLé and Schubert and breeding lines ARSOK S104-2E, ARSOK S104-3E, ARSOK S105-3E and ARSOK S105-4E
  • 5 small-seeded runner types (marketed as Spanish): Cultivars Span17 and Span24 (not in organic trial) and breeding lines ARSOK S95-1, ARSOK S58B and ARSOK S107-1L
  • 4 true Valencia types: Cultivar TamVal OL14 and New Mexico State University breeding lines NMM6, NM310 and NMPR25
  • 1 small-seeded runner type (marketed as Valencia): Georgia Val
  • 8 Virginia types: Cultivars Bailey II and Comrade and breeding lines ARSOK V-98, ARSOK V99, ARSOK V102-5, ARSOK V103-1, ARSOK V103-3 and ARSOK V120L.

All variety trials were conducted under an extensive pest management program with the exception of the organic trial location. The objective was to minimize as much as possible the external influence of pest pressures (weeds, diseases and insects) on yield and grade. The interaction between variety and location was significant, so the results were separated by location. Averages across locations and years were included to give producers a better estimate of line performance. Since the varieties’ and advanced lines’ responses differed by location, growers might find the data for the county closest to their location to be the most useful in selecting a variety or varieties to grow. All test plots were planted using two 36-inch rows that were 15 feet long. Plots were seeded at a rate of 5 seeds per row foot (139,392 seeds per acre). Trials were conducted using a randomized, complete block design with four replications. For all trial locations, two digging dates were used based on entry market type: 120-125 days after planting (DAP) for Spanish and Valencia and 135-150 DAP for runner and Virginia. Peanuts were placed in a dryer until moisture reached 10%. The percentage of total sound mature kernels (% TSMK) was determined on a 200-gram sample from each plot.

Analysis of variance was used to assess the effect of a variety on the multiple response variables. SAS Version 9.4 (PROC MIXED) was used to conduct the analysis. Statistical significance was determined by market type, with Spanish and Valencia types being analyzed together. A randomized complete block design was used, and block is specified as a random effect in the model. Post-hoc comparisons using Tukey adjustments are reported when the overall variety effect is significant in the analysis of variance. Two means reported with the same letter are not significantly different at the 0.05 level. Means for all observations were calculated for each entry and the overall trial. Suppose a given variety out-yields another variety by as much or more than the standard error value. In that case, we are 95% sure the yield difference is real, with only a 5% probability that the difference is due to chance alone. Results reported here should be representative of what might occur throughout the state but would be most applicable under environmental management conditions like those of the trials.

The relative yields of all peanut varieties are affected by crop management and environmental factors, including soil type, summer conditions, soil moisture, disease and insects. Value/acre was determined by converting estimated plot yields to tons per acre and using the 2025 contract price values for each market type ($500 for runner, $600 for Virginia, $650 for traditional Spanish, $650 for small-seeded runners (estimated, no contracts) and $850 for Valencia types). For the organic trial, calculation of value/A was generated using the following contract prices per ton: $1,150 for runner, $1,250 for traditional Spanish, $650 for small-seeded runners (estimated, no contracts) and $1,450 for Valencia. No adjustments were made for damaged kernels or concealed damage. Virginia $/A values may be underestimated as grade is not as large a factor for in-shell peanuts, and the extra-large kernels (ELK) bonus was not added to the final value/acre figure.

Calculations of price value per acre ($/A) are based on yield and grade only and do not include possible input costs. The following formula was used: $/A = yield (tons/A) *contract price ($/ton) *grade.

2025 Tillman County Variety Trial

  • Location: Davidson (Joe D. White Farms)
  • Date planted: May 15, 2025
  • Dig Date:
    • Spanish/Valencia: Oct. 10
    • Runner/Virginia: Oct. 24
  • Thresh Date:
    • Spanish/Valencia: Oct. 14
    • Runner/Virginia: Oct. 27

The trial was planted on May 15 in a conventional till seedbed and managed for foliar and soil-borne diseases throughout the season. Table 3 shows the 2025 yield and grade data from Tillman County. This trial was severely compromised by wild hog damage after planting, especially the Virginia entries. Replanting the affected entries only enticed the hogs to revisit the site. Yield for runner entries was consistent with previous years. The average yield and grade for the runner trial were 6,904 lbs./A and 73.5 %TSMK. ACI 476 had the highest yield among cultivars tested in the trial at 7,841 lbs./A, followed by Lariat at 7,654 lbs./A.

Spanish and Valencia entries were not affected by hog damage and performed well in Tillman County in 2025, with the overall trial average yield being 6,057 lbs./A and an average grade of 70.3 %TSMK. For the true Spanish type entries, the average yield was 6,338 lbs./A, with cultivar OLé yielding best at 6,766 lbs./A. Small-seeded runners marketed as Spanish averaged 7,249 lbs./A. ARS breeding line ARSOK 58B was the top yielder at 7,719 lbs./A. Traditional Valencia entries averaged 4,818 lbs./A with an average grade of 68.8 %TSMK. NMPR25 was the best yielder at 5,317 lbs./A. The average seed size for true Valencia entries was 49g/100 seed. Georgia Val, (a red-seeded runner marketed as Valencia) averaged 5,906 lbs./A with a grade of 74 %TSMK and an average seed size of 65g/100 seed. The average yield and grade for Virginia-type entries were the average for Tillman County at 3,908 lbs./A and 69.3% TSMK. As mentioned, the decline in yield for Virginia entries in 2025 was due to extensive wild hog damage specific to this market type. The top-yielding Virginia entry was breeding line ARSOK V103-1 at 5,188 lbs./A.

Table 8 contains yield and grade data averaged across 2024-2025 for the Tillman County trial. The average yield among runner entries for the two years was 6,707 lbs./A, and the average grade was 74.6 %TSMK. Significant differences in yield were reported for runner entries over the two years, and cultivars ACI 476 and Lariat were the top yielders at 7,838 and 7,019 lbs./A. For Spanish entries, significant differences in yield were also observed. The overall trial average over two years was 5,374 lbs./A. Traditional Spanish entries averaged 5,558 lbs./A, with OLé being the top yielder at 6,331 lbs./A. The average yield for small-seeded runner entries marketed as Spanish was 6,732 lbs./A, and cultivar Span17 was the top yielder, averaging 7,200 lbs./A. Breeding line ARSOK 58B averaged 6,853 lbs./A over the two-year period. Traditional Valencia entries averaged 3,993 lbs./A, with TamVal OL14 and NMPR25 being the top yielders at 4,601 and 4,606 lbs./A. Georgia Val, a red-seeded runner marketed as Valencia, averaged 5,571 lbs./A with an average grade of 73 %TSMK and an average seed size of 73 g/100 seed, compared to that of 50.5 g/100 seed for traditional Valencia entries.

The two-year average yield for Virginia entries was 4,946 lbs./A. The decline in yield from 2024 levels was due to wild hog damage suffered in 2025. Of the cultivars tested, Comrade was the top yielder at 4,919 and 5,898 lbs./A. Comrade had the largest seed size at 106 g/100 seed compared to Bailey II at 90 g/100 seed. Among the breeding lines evaluated, ARSOK V98 was the top yielder at 5,336 lbs./A.

This is the first year an organic trial has been conducted, so no two-year analysis was possible. The trial was planted on May 14 in a conventional till seedbed and manually managed for weeds throughout the season. Value per acre for entries was calculated based on 2025 Hampton Farms contract prices, except for small-seeded runners, for which no contracts were offered. For all entries across market types, yield was lower than in other locations, but grades were generally higher in the organic trial. Cultivar Span24 was omitted from this trial because untreated seed was not available.

Table 4 shows the 2025 yield and grade data from the Organic trial in Hydro. The average yield and grade for the runner test was 4,818 lbs./A and 74.5 %TSMK. There were no significant differences in yield among entries. Breeding line ARSOK R109-1L was the top yielder at 4,994 lbs./A. Except for breeding line ARSOK R95-1, all entries had an estimated value per acre above $2,000. Spanish entries performed reasonably well in this trial, with the overall trial average yield being 3,757 lbs./A and an average grade of 68.9 %TSMK. For the true Spanish type entries, the average yield was 3,746 lbs./A, with cultivar OLé yielding best at 3,659 lbs./A among similar entries. Breeding line ARSOK 104-2E was the highest yielding true Spanish entry, averaging 4,340 lbs./A. Small-seeded runners marketed as Spanish averaged 4,232 lbs./A. ARS breeding lines ARSOK 58B and ARSOK S107-1L were the top yielders at 4,340 and 4,714 lbs./A.
