Overview

  • The performance of runner entries varied, but averages across locations in 2024 indicated that cultivars ACI 476 and Lariat were the top entries in yield and value per acre.
  • The small-seeded runner-type Span17 (marketed as Spanish) was the top-yielding cultivar among similar entries. ARS breeding line ARSOK S58B, a small-seeded runner with resistance to Sclerotinia blight, performed well and will be released this year.
  • Among the true Spanish entries, OLé was the top performer. ARS breeding line ARSOK S104-2E yielded well and is being considered for release.
  • Traditional Valencia breeding lines from New Mexico State University performed well across most locations, with NMPR25 being the highest yielder.
  • Significant differences were not noted in Virginia entry yields across locations and years. Comrade was consistently the top performer for yield and value per acre.

Peanut production in Oklahoma is generally located in three geographical regions: southwest, west-central and northwest. Each region differs from the others in environmental and biological stressors that affect crop production, so the same peanut cultivar will likely perform differently in each growing region. Therefore, the Oklahoma Peanut Variety Trials are conducted in each region annually and are designed to test the performance of commonly grown cultivars and potential cultivar releases against each other. Valencia breeding lines and cultivars were added as trial entries due to industry interest in growing this market type in the state. Also included in the trial are several small-seeded runner lines or cultivars that are intended to be marketed as Spanish or Valencia peanuts. These entries are noted as small-seeded runners in trial data tables. Like in 2022 and 2023, the growing season was unusually hot and dry with temperatures above 100 degrees Fahrenheit for part of July without any rainfall or relief. Adverse environmental conditions and biological stressors as well as cultural mistakes should be noted for the trial conducted in Hydro. Tight soil conditions and a severe late-season outbreak of Verticillium wilt affected entry performance. The second digging (for runner and Virginia entries) was mistakenly performed without the knowledge of researchers and coupled with strong winds and dry conditions, resulting in drastically lower yields for those entries. This lowered the two-year average yields and yields across locations for runner and Virginia entries. Those averages are atypical and should not be used to judge entry performance over time. The results of these annual trials can serve as a guide for producers when choosing a cultivar to plant.

Variety Trial Methods

All entries (cultivars and advanced breeding lines) in the Oklahoma Peanut Variety Trials were high- oleic. Thirty-five entries were included in all locations in 2024:

  • Eight runner-types: ACI 080, ACI 476, ACI 509, ACI 3321 and Lariat and breeding lines ARSOK 95-1, ARSOK R106-9L and ARSOK R109-1L
  • Eight true Spanish types: OLé and Schubert and breeding lines ARSOK S104-2E, ARSOK S104-3E, ARSOK S105-3E and ARSOK S105-4E
  • Four small-seeded runner types (marketed as Spanish): Span17 and breeding lines ARSOK S95-1, ARSOK S58B and ARSOK S107-1L
  • Five true Valencia types: TamVal14 and New Mexico State University breeding lines NMM6, NM310 and NMPR25
  • Two small-seeded runner types (marketed as Valencia): IPG 1288 and Georgia Val
  • Eight Virginia types: Bailey II, Comrade and Emery and breeding lines ARSOK V-98, ARSOK V99, ARSOK V102-5, ARSOK V103-1 and ARSOK V103-3.

All variety trials were conducted under an extensive pest management program. The objective was to prevent as much outside influence from pest pressures (weeds, disease and insects) on yield and grade as possible. The interaction between variety and location was significant, so the results were separated by location. Averages across locations and years were included to give producers a better estimate of line performance. Since the varieties and advanced lines responses differed by location, growers will likely find the data for the county closest to their location to be the most useful in selecting a variety or varieties to grow. All test plots were planted using two 36-inch rows 15 feet long. Plots were seeded at a rate of 5 seeds/row foot (139,392 seeds/A). Trials were conducted using a randomized, complete block design with four replications. The entire plot was dug and then thrashed two to three days later. Peanuts were placed in a dryer until moisture reached 10%. The percentage of total sound mature kernels (% TSMK) was determined on a 200-gram sample from each plot.

Analysis of variance procedures was used to assess the effect of a variety on the multiple response variables. SAS Version 9.4 (PROC MIXED) was used to conduct the analysis. Statistical significance was determined by market type, with Spanish and Valencia types being analyzed together. A randomized complete block design was used, and block is specified as a random effect in the model. Post-hoc comparisons using Tukey adjustments are reported when the overall variety effect is significant in the analysis of variance. Two means reported with the same letter are not significantly different at the 0.05 level.

Means for all observations were calculated for each entry and the overall trial. Suppose a given variety out-yields another variety by as much or more than the standard error value. In that case, we are 95% sure the yield difference is real, with only a 5% probability that the difference is due to chance alone. Results reported here represent what might occur throughout the state but would be most applicable under environmental management conditions similar to the variety trials. The relative yields of all peanut varieties are affected by crop management and environmental factors, including soil type, summer conditions, soil moisture, disease and insects.

Value/acre was determined by converting estimated plot yields to tons/acre and using the 2024 contract price values for each market type ($625 for runner and Virginia types, $775 for traditional Spanish, $725 for small-seeded runners and $900 for Valencia types). No adjustments were made for damaged kernels or concealed damage. Virginia $/A values may be underestimated as grade is not as large a factor for in-shell peanuts, and the extra-large kernels (ELK) bonus was not added to the final value/acre figure. Calculations of $/A are based on yield and grade only and do not include possible input costs. The following formula was used: $/A = yield (tons/A)*contract price ($/ton)*grade.

2024 Blaine County Variety Trial

Information Data
Location: Hydro (Schantz Farms)
Date Planted: May 9
Dig Date
Spanish/Valencia: Sept. 30
Runner/Virginia: Oct. 5*
Thresh Date
Spanish/Valencia: Oct. 3
Runner/Virginia: Oct. 15*

The trial was planted on May 9, 2024, into a conventional till seedbed and managed for weeds and foliar and soil-borne diseases throughout the season. It should be noted that the soil in the trial area was much tighter than at previous trial locations. Additionally, this location suffered a severe onset of Verticillium wilt late in the season. The second digging date of the trial was originally set for Oct. 14 but was accidentally dug on Oct. 5 (nine days early), and we received notification one week later. Consequently, the wind rows were on the ground for 10 days rather than the standard three days before they were threshed. The delay in threshing left the plots vulnerable to weather, including extreme dry heat and wind, which diminished yields among the runner and Virginia entries. Therefore, the data reported for this trial in 2024 is atypical and should not be considered when estimating runner and Virginia entry average performance.

The average yield for the runner test (Table 2) was 1,407 pounds/acre with an average grade of 72% TSMK. Statistical differences for yield and grade were reported, but the top-yielding entries were ACI 476 at 1,919 pounds/acre, ACI 509 at 1,569 pounds/acre and Lariat at 1,652 pounds/acre. Breeding line ARSOK R109-1L yielded 1,707 pounds/acre. Again, these yields were affected by disease, early digging and delayed threshing after digging.

Yields and grades for the Spanish and Valencia entries at this location were also lower than in the past, possibly due to the different soil type. The trial average yield and grade were 3,018 pounds/acre and 67% TSMK, respectively.

The average yield for the true Spanish entries was 3,067 pounds/acre, with cultivar Schubert and breeding line ARSOK S107-1L being the best yielders at 3,303 and 3,878 pounds/acre, respectively. For small-seeded runners marketed as Spanish, the average yield was 3,686 pounds/acre, and Span17 had the highest yield at 4,094 pounds/acre.

Valencia entries averaged 2,194 pounds/acre with breeding line NM310 having the top yield at 2,484 pounds/acre. Small-seeded runners marketed as Valencia averaged 3,151 pounds/acre, and the top yielder was cultivar IPG 1288, which averaged 3,492 pounds/acre.

Verticillium wilt damage was rated on Sept. 27 by estimating the percentage of plants within plots with symptoms of wilt and leaf yellowing and necrosis.

Virginia entries averaged 1,418 pounds/acre and a grade of 64% TSMK, and as with runner entries, yields for this trial were drastically lower than in past years. Cultivar Emery and breeding line ARSOK V102-5 were the top yielders at 1,626 and 1,521 pounds/acre, respectively.

Table 7 lists the two-year trial averages for the Hydro location. Averages are lower than expected due to the results from the 2024 trial. Runner entries averaged 4,218 pounds/acre and a grade of 72% TSMK. Lariat was the top yielder at 4,464 pounds/acre and a grade of 73% TSMK.

Traditional Spanish entries averaged 3,967 pounds/acre with breeding line ARSOK S104-3E having the top yield at 4,244 pounds/acre. Small-seeded runners marketed as Spanish averaged 4,785 pounds/acre, and Span17 was the highest yielder at 5,331 pounds/acre.

Valencia entries averaged 3,250 pounds/acre with cultivar TamVal OL14 and breeding line NMPR25 being the best yielders at 3,544 and 3,307 pounds/acre, respectively. Small-seeded runners marketed as Valencia averaged 4,102 pounds/acre, and cultivar IPG 1288 was the highest yielder at 4,633 pounds/acre.

Virginia entries had an average yield and grade of 4,157 pounds/acre and 65% TSMK, respectively. No significant differences in yield were seen for Virginia entries when data was averaged for 2023 and 2024.
